Compound Medications Matter: Perspectives from Patients, Providers and Payers
Published by International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists and Missouri Pharmacy Association

The ongoing debate around the price inflation on generic medications has resumed conversations about the relevance of compound medications. While the unfathomable increase in the cost of compound medications between 2012 and 2015 has spurred the government and payers to tighten controls and plug leaky management strategies, compound medications have thrived and, in some cases, provide the best available intervention for a patient, as well as the standard of care for a particular health problem. This presentation uses results from comprehensive surveys to capture the patient, prescriber, and payer experiences and attitudes toward compounded medications in spite of the anxious rhetoric and aggressive management strategies around these medications.

At the end of this program attendees will be able to:
• Recognize patient, physician, and payer attitudes on the safety, cost, efficacy and need for compounded medications to meet unique patient care requirements.
• Illustrate the perceived and real barriers such as formulary strategies for compounded medication use and its overall impact on patient outcomes (including clinical, productivity, and quality of life).
• Show tools and future strategies that plan sponsors are considering to manage compound medications.
