  1. The Current State of the Community Pharmacy: What’s Around the Corner
    Activity Description:
    As pharmacists we are perfectly poised to reclaim our space at the center of our patient’s family healthcare team. We can effectively use our biochemical knowledge to positively impact our patient’s health, while making our businesses financial powerhouses. What if you spent your day caring for your patients instead of chasing pennies from insurers or drug manufactures? Nutritional sales in the United States are approximately 36 billion dollars annually. 7 out of 10 patients walking in your pharmacy buy nutritional products. Are the getting advice from you? Are they buying them from you? Community pharmacies can improve patient service and outcomes with respect to nutritional services through the adoption of new operational strategies.

    Learning Objectives:
    At the conclusion of this activities, the pharmacist / pharmacy technician will be able to:
    1. Assess new models for pharmacy growth
    2. State common objections pharmacists use to keep status quo strategies
    3. Express general satisfaction / dissatisfaction of healthcare workers and patients with the current American healthcare model

  2. The Critical Role of Adrenal Hormones in Immunity
    PLEASE NOTE: This program has a full slide presentation on video, but does NOT include any audio. You will just be reading along with the slide deck and then taking a post-test upon completion to earn CE.

    Activity Description:
    Every day, pharmacists see patients experiencing health problems resulting from chronic stress, many of whom are struggling with immune issues. Adrenal hormones, including cortisol, DHEA, estrogen and testosterone have a powerful impact on immune function and vice versa. This clinically oriented presentation is designed to help pharmacy healthcare professionals understand this interaction, and its clinical outcomes and significance as a factor in BHRT prescription. Join us to learn the best laboratory tests and interpretations for monitoring immune and steroid function, and successful treatment protocols to balance these interactions. This presentation is designed for you to start Monday morning with a new and exciting way to approach your patients’ immune and hormone balance.

    At the completion of this activity, the pharmacist and pharmacy technician will be able to:
    1. Define how adrenal hormones affect immunity
    2. Explain how different aspects of immunity, in turn, affect adrenal hormones
    3. Identify how high and low cortisol and other steroid hormone levels modify Th1/Th2 function and outcomes in infections and autoimmunity
    4. State clinical presentations of Th1 vs Th2 dominant patients
    5. Show clinical outcomes of hormone/immune interactions in low and high hormone states
    6. Discuss laboratory tests to monitor key hormone and immune functions
    7. Identify clinical interventions to alter and rebalance hormone and immune dysfunction

  3. The Benefits of a Whole-Food, Plant-Based Diet Without Oil
    Activity Description:
    This group discussion will assist wellness-focused community pharmacies in making people well while potentially reducing medicine intake. Participants will learn the benefits of a following a Whole-Food Plant-Based (WFPB) diet without oil. They will also learn the foods that can be consumed on a WFPB diet without oil. The presentation will detail specific steps that pharmacists can take to educate customers who are interested in adopting a WFPB diet without oil. Tips and suggestions for creating a support-community for clients who have chosen to embark on a WFPB diet without oil will also be provided. By following the strategies given during this session, pharmacists will be able to strengthen their positive reputation, increase sales and build customer loyalty.

    At the completion of this activity, the pharmacist and pharmacy technician will be able to:
    1. Describe the scientifically proven health benefits of eating a whole-food, plant-based diet without oil
    2. Identify acceptable foods employed in a whole-food, plant-based diet without oil
    3. Educate patients on the benefits of, and guidelines for adopting a whole-food, plant-based diet without oil
    4. Create a support-community for customers who have adopted a whole-food plant-based diet without oil

  4. Providing Pharmacy Services to Bariatric Surgery Patients
    Activity Description:
    Almost 200,000 bariatric surgeries were performed in the United States in 2015. Pharmacists need to know that the impact on patients is more than just weight loss. Procedures can affect medication absorption, dosing forms and requirements, and result in nutritional deficiencies in patients. Using live demonstration and case study, this session will identify issues frequently seen by community pharmacists when treating bariatric surgery patients.

    At the completion of this activity, the pharmacist and pharmacy technician will be able to:
    1. Discuss protein and nutritional supplements requirements for bariatric surgery patients
    2. Identify alternative compounded treatment options for bariatric surgery patients
    3. Discuss the ADME process for drugs before and after bariatric surgery
    4. Identify dosage forms that are suitable for bariatric surgery patients
    5. Explain what medications are needed immediately after surgery
    6. Make recommendations on dosing medications
    7. Explain how certain drugs may have a different effect on these patients

  5. Obesity Treatment and the Role That a Pharmacist Can Play
    Activity Description:
    According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data in 2016, more than one-third (36.5%) of U.S. adults are obese. Community pharmacists are uniquely positioned to address obesity education and treatment options with their patients. This session will identify market opportunities for pharmacists within the health care system to develop a profitable obesity treatment niche.

    At the completion of this activity, the pharmacist and pharmacy technician will be able to:
    1. Define obesity and health conditions associated with a sedentary lifestyle and/or poor diet
    2. Outline and explore reasons that pharmacists are the health care professionals to best address obesity treatment
    3. Identify market opportunities for treatment of obesity and related health conditions
    4. Describe how the changing needs of the emerging health care system is presenting opportunities to collaborate w/other health care professionals to address the obesity epidemic
    5. Discuss the opportunities of implementing Obesity programs as a profitable Niche in the pharmacy and potential competitive edge with 3rd party/ACO contracts
